In order to help close the budget deficit, President Obama has ordered the Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to make $400 billion in spending cuts through 2023.
As a result, Gates announced Thursday that the Air Force has been forced to hold a bake sale to buy more bombers.
“The brownies have been moving pretty good. But I have to admit the lemon squares have been something of a disappointment.
“Those were the Joint Chiefs’ idea. I told them that was more of a specialty item that really only appeals to little old ladies nowadays. I said stick to brownies, chocolate chip cookies, you know, the basics.”
Democratic and Republic members of the United States House Committee on Armed Services differed on how to run the bake sale. Republicans wanted to limit the size of the sale and accused Liberal Democrats of spending too much on ingredients.
Republicans complained that they paid for a lot of the sugar and flour when they went shopping, while Democrats countered that most of the baking was done at their house and anyways the Democrats had to do most of the work while Republicans just sat around sampling brownies.
After the bake sale, held at New Jersey’s sprawling McGuire Air Force Base, Gates declared the sale a success, but complained about the increased funding that education would now be receiving.
“I guess teaching kids is important. But you try baking 68 Billion cookies. And half of them are burnt on the bottom because someone wasn’t paying attention. There goes the B-2 Spirit Stealth program.”
